This is the email I get this morning:
I call this photo…
“trash can’s demise” or “the fall of the giant”.
What you don’t see in the photo is the rest of the field, about 2 minutes behind him. The rider in this photo was a ringer hired for betting purposes. Betting against me. I was bet a whole $1.50 that I could beat said rider by a minute fifty seconds. After all, I was told “this was only the second time on he was ever on a cross bike”. What I wasn’t told was that he currently held a semi-pro mountain bike license and the first time he rode a cross bike was when he completely blew away the cat 4 class at Gloucester the week before. Let’s just say I lost this bet, by about 5 minutes or so. As soon as he crossed the line, USA Cycling made him upgrade. Lesson learned. Always get the odds and study up on the opposition before laying down hard earned cash.
Ok, I lost a buck 50 you might be thinking. Here is the real kicker. I rarely carry cash with me. So, to start paying off my debt, I took a few quarters out of my car to pay “the bookie”. Well, those quarters were quite valuable. On the way home from Providence, there are a few tolls. And those tolls don’t take bank cards. So I couldn’t pay those tolls. Do you know if you don’t have the money for a toll, the toll commission (or whoever they are) will send you a bill for them?? I did not know that then, but I do now and will have to send them a check for $0.75, plus some extra for a “processing fee” and s stamp. This $1.50 bet is turning out to be a pain.
