Sure, it is cold out and I have been doing a lot outside, but that isn’t what makes my toes numb.
Last year, when I raced the 24 Hours of Great Glen, for some reason, my big toe went numb. Nothing major I thought. Must have just been because I had my foot jammed in my bike shoes for 24 hours. A month went by, still numb. 2 months, 3 months, still numb. It was something I learned to live with. nothing major. Fast forward to almost 6 months later and the toe is still numb. No idea why, but it is.
I really started to think about it when I rode outside last night. It was about 10 degrees at its warmest and all my toes went numb. After th3 1.5 hours out there, I honestly thought I was going to need to go to the hospital for frostbite. When I got home and pulled off my shoes and socks, both pinky toes were dark purple, almost black. “That can’t be good,” I thought. Hopped in the shower, yelled when that hot water hit, bit my tongue and toughed it out. By the time I was done, all toes were back to normal, except that one big toe that is still numb from August……ohh well.
